FOREIGNERS READ, CHINESE STUCKON THEIR PHONES

A series of photos taken by a photographer fromthe Zhejiang Daily taken in an airport in Bangkok, Thailandfocus on a strange trend: where most of the Chinese citizens were practicallyglued to their phones, foreigners were enjoying good ol’ fashioned paper books– or just doing practically anything other then using electronic devices.

Sadly, addiction to your mobile phones is not a sickness anymore, it’s a part of everyone’s life

While waiting in the airport, the reporter noticedthree foreigners reading a book or having a quiet chat, while the Chinese wereconstantly on their phones, never once looking up to see what was going on.

The furthest distance in the world is not between life and death, but between me standing right behind you and you playing with your phone.

Of course, it’s just one airport, and maybe thereporter was jumping to conclusions. What do you think?

GUY SAYS:
Definitely jumping to conclusions. As an American,I can assume the ‘foreigners’ know that battery life doesn’t last for everduring transit,so a good paperback book is a solid choice for travel. Secondly, Ifyou were to go to the West and take these photographs you would find just asmany westerners glued to their phones. I currently live in Guangzhou and have found many chinese usingtheir phones to read books.

ARNOLD SAYS:
As foreigner who is glued to my phone more than Icare to admit, I can’t help but suspect that most of these laowais are travelersor tourists, especially based on their luggage, not to mention the womanreading the Chinaguidebook. Maybe, as tourists, they very well could not have Chinese SIM cardsand cannot play around on their phone like the Chinese do?

XX SAYS:
i am sorry but good writers dont take sides whenthey write a story. This is a good phenomena but is written like a piece ofcheap gossip tabloid

OLIVIA SAYS:
Hey XX, I’m sorry to see you’re so upset. TWOCfrequently runs celebrity news and other non-serious stories like this becausethey’re still a part of contemporary Chinese culture. The author wrote thisarticle because these photos of Westerners reading books/Chinese on phones weretrending on Chinese social media, and lots of people were discussing it.Disagreeing with the article is a totally valid kind of discussion. But I’m notsure why you decided to call the author’s work cheap and gossipy – it’s justsocial media reporting, at the end of the day.

AGENT 669 SAYS:
some truth there. I have noticed this so many timesin Beijingsubway
