A section of the Great Wall of China hasbeen set aside for graffiti in a bid to save other parts being vandalised bytourists.

Authorities chose a popular stretch of theancient monument where visitors can scrawl their names in the hope it will stopthe spread of graffiti.

Most of the graffiti is written in English, with phrases like 'I was 'ere' and notices saying who to call 'for a good time'common.

A spot on the Mutianyu section in Huairou County, about 43 miles north-east ofBeijing, was chosen. It is one of the most popular tourist spots along thewall.

The graffiti section will be set up at oneof the fighting towers that has become a common place there for tourists toscrawl on the walls.

It attracts millions of tourists per year,40 per cent of whom are estimated to be foreigners, which explains why most ofthe graffiti is in English.

Graffiti has long been a problem with Chinese scenic sites, and has sparkedinnovative responses from authorities.

Officials in Wuhan set up touch-screengraffiti platforms to keep visitors from carving their initials into a localpagoda.

The minders of the Great Wall arereportedly also considering 'an electronic graffiti board,' to hopefully cutdown on permanent desecration of the site.

The original Great Wall dates back to seventh century China, but the section inZhangjiakou was rebuilt more than 500 years ago in 1484 during the MingDynasty.

The wall has been constantly rebuilt andrepaired throughout history. An expert said: 'Like any building project, somework lasts longer than others.'

Still one of the only man made objectsvisible from space, the wall is made of stone, brick, tamped earth, wood, andother materials.

The problem is that people always want toleave their mark, just look at Stonehenge which has also got Roman graffiti onit. People wouldn't use a new dedicated graffiti wall because you can write ona wall at home but the Great Wall is something that people believe will standthe test of time. Might be a better idea to have a section for that so the restis protected, been there and the random graffiti can be found all along thewall and does ruin the experience a bit, but not much.

I bet Banksy is packing his bags as I writethis.

What a terrible idea. If you must, construct a new graffiti wall near the Great Wall that people can leavemessages on.
