There is no reasonfor holidaymakers on a budget to deprive themselves — you just need a plannedapproach and an eye for a bargain.

Wish you could gotravelling next year, but think you can't afford it? That's rubbish, says anexpert budget traveller. Matthew Kepnes has been travelling the world for sixyears now, and has little patience with those who say they can't afford totravel.

Kepnes, or Nomadic Matt as he is known to fans of his popular travelblog nomadicmatt.com, says travel is "only as expensive as you makeit", and that anyone can afford to hit the road if they make it apriority.

Kepnes, who first set off when he was 25, travelson about $US50 ($48) a day, or $20,000 a year. The 31-year-old American is nowmaking about five times that through his website and book sales.

Yet he sticks tohis modest spending as a way of life rather than a necessity.

"I personallydon't believe you need to deprive yourself when you travel, you just need topick and choose where you spend your money," he says.

"Frugaltravel isn't bound by age; it's simply knowing that more money doesn't equal abetter holiday and there's no reason to spend unwisely."

Getting started
Kepneswas working in anadministrative job and earning only $30,000 a year before he set off on hisfirst overseas trip.

He managed to saveabout $20,000 through cutting out non-essential spending and selling offpossessions.

Kepnes recommends that those who want to travelmake a list of all of their set expenses and discretionary spending and startcutting.

His top targetsinclude takeaway coffee, running a car, eating at restaurants, pay television, alcohol and having a telephone landline.

Getting smart
Kepnes's No.1 tipfor travelling on the cheap is being flexible, both with timing and plans.

"Thedifference of a day or two can mean the difference in hundreds of dollars inthe price of a plane ticket," he says. "By being flexible on yourdestination, you can get amazing last-minute deals on cruises, tours or hotels.

"For example,on a cruise, they need to fill cabins, so if you wait until the last minute youcan find deals for less than $US100 ($95) a day.

"Take timeoff work and go wherever the prices are cheapest."

Kepnes says travellers should also learn to mixand match their destinations. "Get out to destinations and areas thataren't as expensive in order to balance all the expensive ones," he says.

Finding a bed
When Kepnes first started travelling, he spent all his time inhostels or "couch surfing", in which travellers stay in people'shouses for nothing (see couchsurfing.org).

He now breaks uphostel accommodation with stays in rented apartments or budget hotels, withoutblowing his spending.

"I don't carewhere I stay, so I pick cheap hotels and I tend to walk everywhere so that Ihave money for what is important to me - activities and food," he says.

Getting around
Where he can'twalk, Kepnes will most likely go by bus or train.

"I rarelyhitchhike ... it's not something I feel comfortable doing, considering I carrya lot of electronics," he says.

"Buses are byfar the cheapest form of transportation and I normally get bus passes where Igo.

"In Europeand Australia,I purchase rail passes and take the trains."

For flights,Kepnes recommends Australian travellers take a budget airline such as Jetstar,Air Asia or Tiger Airways to a major city in Asiaand get an onward flight from there.

"It willrequire more work and flight changes, but you can potentially save a tremendousamount of money," he says.

Kepnes uses thewebsite Kayak to find all flight options out of a givencity.

"That way youcan simply find the cheapest destination and go there," he says.

Staying fed
Kepnes shuns restaurants and cooks all his ownmeals but says he never feels like he is missing out.

"If I'mtravelling in France,of course I want to try the local food, but you can still enjoy local food byheading to the market," he says.

"Get somecheeses, meats and vegetables and have a picnic."

Kepnes says supermarkets are also a great way tolearn about local ingredients and preferences.

Kepnes

"Yes, I wantto go to amazing restaurants and eat delicious meals, but you can learn moreabout local food from local markets," he says.

Seeing the sights
"I never skipanything I really want to see," Kepnes says."If I want to see it that badly, I'll always pay for it."

Kepnes says helooks on the internet for details of free exhibits or free museum days.

"A lot ofmuseums offer special times when they are open for free, and I try to gothen," he says.

"I also lookfor combination passes where I can get multiple attractions for oneprice."

I have travelledcheaply ever since I read a tiny book in the early 80's "The Poor Person'sGuide to Queensland"by Connie Dalgliesh. Her sensible tips have seen metravel across the globe with very little and yet I have seen a lot and sleptand eaten well.

In Asia, $50 a dayis flashpacking, not backpacking, reasonable for Europethough.

We just got backfrom a quick trip to London, Parisand Italy. We took trains everywhere. Choose your time and they can be incredibly cheap,Eurostar London -Paris £63. Can be over £200 if you choosea popular time, Overnight train Paris-Rome

I have foundpopular times have little to do with trains, but booking in advance will getyou cheap tickets. if you leave it late, it is often cheaper to fly, even withcosts of getting to/from airport.

I'm well past thatsort of limited travel. I would prefer to live it up over 2-3 weeks on vacationas opposed to being a penny pincher and not being able to do all that youdesire, owing to such a limited budget, simply because one chooses to put theinevitable reality of returning home, off for as long as possible.

Very biasedarticle...geared towards the single traveller. Seriously if you can't travel onthe cheap when you are single you should stay at home. If anyone has any ideasfor cheap travel with 4 kids I would love to hear them. My kids are all over 12so it is now 6 adult fares to go anywhere.

I was so excitedfor a second when I thought there would be advice on saving money for people ona low income. Then.... "His top targets include takeaway coffee, running acar, eating at restaurants, pay television, alcohol and having a telephonelandline."Dammit, I don'tspend money on any of that non-essential stuff and I still have zero savingsfor my Eurotrip :|

What are youspending your money on? Do you need to work more hours rather than looking atcutting spending?

Just the basicslike rent, groceries, bills and bus tickets, but I have pretty high medicalexpenses which is really annoying. I do get a takeaway lunch ($5-10) about oncea week which I really shouldn't, but I'll go nuts if I have to eat bread andfrozen peas and canned tuna all the time.
I've been lookinginto doing English tutoring outside work, so hopefully that will bring in somemore cash! I swear I will get to Norwayand Germany one day... and Peru and Nepaland Turkey.Okay I'll stop now.

I'm planning totravel around Europe for 6 months from Junethis year. Does anyone have any other tips or bits of advice they canrecommend? I'm a young female so if anyone has trips on travelling alone forsomeone with my demographic, that would be helpful!!

If you want tosave money avoid France and Italy. They arethe most dangerous and most expensive countries on the continent. The winethere is also aweful compared to most other countries.
