As TikTok anxiously awaits a Supreme Court decision that could determine whether it will be banned in the United States, users are preemptively fleeing the app and migrating to another Chinese social media platform called RED, which literally means "Xiaohongshu" in Mandarin. As of Monday, Rednote was the number one most-downloaded app in Apple's US App Store.
Over the weekend, thousands of people began swarming to Rednote, which is known in China as a platform for travel and lifestyle content and has over 300 million users. The newcomers, who refer to the RED and call themselves "TikTok refugees", are relying on translation tools to navigate Rednote's mostly Chinese ecosystem.
大家有没有发现，从昨天开始，打开社交媒体以后突然出现了很多“歪果仁”？不少中国网友直接懵了：“一觉醒来我成外国人了？” 起因是美国最高法院宣布将就禁止TikTok在美国运营的法案再次进行讨论，在法案1月19日生效前对该问题作出裁决。如果讨论后依然没有变化，TikTok将在美国停止运营，这使得众多美国年轻人开始寻找TikTok的“平替”。涌入的美国用户也戏称自己为“TikTok难民”（TikTok refugee）。
