One child policy was first introduced in 1979 by leader Deng Xiaoping to alleviate social, economic and environmental problems in China. Although designated as a "temporary measure", it continues a quarter-century since its establishment. The policy limits couples to have only one baby. Fines, pressures to abort the second pregnancy, and even forced sterilization accompanied second or subsequent pregnancies. Demographers estimate that the policy averted at least 200 million births between 1979 and 2009. A 2008 survey undertaken by the Pew Research Centre reported that 76% of the Chinese population supports the policy.
Since the beginning of this year, if a couple is composed of one people without siblings, then they may also have two children of their own, thus preventing too dramatic of a population decrease. By now almost one year, it is estimated there would be 2 million couples want to have a second child. However, only 0.7million couples submitted their applications. And the open of two children policy to all couples is now under discussion, this might come true in 2015. So what do you think of these birth rate control policies?
