Gleevec,the breakthrough in Cancer treatment is likely to cause problems in China. A man Lu Yong was charged with "the sale of fake drugs" recently because he introduced Indian Gleevec to Chinese patients. This case once again set off debates on which is more important? The patient's life? or the profits of medicine developers.
In contrast with patented drugs sold for higher prices, the compulsory license practice enabled an Indian generic version to be more affordable. In China, there is also such a stipulation in patent law, but it has never been resorted to. This result in the price of Gleevec in China need 23500 RMB/Box, however, in India, it only need 200 RMB/Box.
Lu himself was diagnosed with leukemia in 2002 and began to take Gleevec, In 2004 he began to turn to Gleevec's Indian version, he shared his find with other leukemia patients by QQ. As a result, more than 1,000 members followed suit. Lu served as an interpreter for them, free of charge. For him, the biggest benefit was the free drugs provided to him by the Indian company, untill he was caught by police.
